haha, I don't know what you mean by "somewhere nice". It seems there are little snippets of beauty all around, and you are lucky enough to find large frame shots of it quite often. (Here, if I took large frame shots, usually they would include power poles and I hate them. hahaha. Not that cityscapes aren't great too, I just never fall in love with them because that's what I see every day. Maybe that's the same for you then.)
Good choice, the Redwoods are AMAZING. If you go, take a stop at this little dinky tourist spot that has a Paul Bunion (sp?) giant statue, that talks and moves. When I was little I would sit on Paul's shoe and he talked and winked and waved. HAHAHA. It was the coolest thing ever. Like a talking doll that was a house tall. If I remember, there was also a gift shop and maybe a hike or train near that? Mostly kid like but hilarious for adults too.
But for Photography, Lake Shasta and Mount Shasta are gorgeous.
